The briquetting industry is a unique business due to the wide variety of applications. While we have standard rules of thumb for creating well-designed pockets, we must adapt to the specific situation presented to us. Every powder possesses unique characteristics, including particle size distribution, particle shape, compressibility, density, and moisture content. These distinct qualities are precisely why a single pocket shape cannot satisfy every application.
At KOMAREK, we design and manufacture custom briquetting pockets tailored to the unique requirements of each application. In many cases, customers require a highly specialized pocket geometry to achieve the desired briquette characteristics. A familiar example is the charcoal industry, where the distinctive pillow-shaped briquette found in backyard grills is the result of purposeful engineering rather than aesthetics alone.
Shape
Although most consumers never consider the shape of a charcoal briquette, its geometry is driven by the material’s characteristics and the demands of the application. Charcoal is one of the easiest materials to briquette because it compacts well and releases cleanly from the pockets. This allows engineers to use deeper pockets than would be possible with more challenging materials, producing thicker, well-defined briquettes.
Since charcoal releases so easily, it also lends itself to custom embossing. Company logos or other branding can be incorporated directly into the pocket design, creating a permanent imprint on each briquette—a feature that would be difficult to achieve with materials that have poorer release characteristics.
The familiar pillow shape also serves a functional purpose. Its geometry promotes airflow between individual briquettes, resulting in more efficient ignition and improved combustion. Many charcoal briquettes take this concept a step further by incorporating ridges into the pocket design, which further increases airflow and enhances burning performance.
Capacity & Volume
Shape and size are not only critical for customers selling briquettes as a retail product. Many of our industrial clients only require briquetting for ease of transport or to reincorporate waste products back into their production lines. For these applications, we design pockets that maximize manufacturing efficiency while meeting the customer’s capacity and volume requirements. Consider steel mill waste, which requires a specific surface area to volume ratio to be fully utilized in a blast furnace. If you attempt to feed raw powder directly into the furnace, the upward gas velocity simply blows it away. Through an optimized pocket design, we can turn these recycled waste streams into a highly valuable, usable product.
From a design perspective, pocket shape is only one piece of the puzzle; pocket layout also plays a significant role in the performance of a roller press. Depending on the shape, aligning the pockets in-line versus staggering allows designers to reduce the production of fines, reduce hydraulic spikes, and extend the operational life of the rolls. If pockets are positioned too close together, the area between them will prematurely wear away, reducing roll life. Inversely, if pockets are spaced too far apart, the fines percentage will increase and capacity will suffer. At KOMAREK, we understand that finding the perfect balance between pocket shape, machine performance, and roll longevity requires technical expertise. No matter how challenging your material is, our team is ready to test, design, and manufacture the exact solution your operation needs.
